DAVE MITCHELL

A native of Georgia, Dave has spent the last 25 years living in the heart of Atlanta. Sharing a love of both music and nature, he has dedicated his life to nurturing his multiple talents in the arts. Completely self taught, Dave has spent over a decade composing and honing his piano technique. After setting up a home recording studio, Dave pursued a more serious career in composition. Several of his instrumental pieces have been published.

For years, while designing and maintaining landscapes for prominent Atlanta families, Dave developed an interest in creating elaborate water features using rock elements and foliage to create naturalistic waterfalls and ponds. Each water feature maintained an effortless and organic feel, varying from multiple level ponds and waterfalls, to quaint barrel pools inhabited with Koi. Several of these exquisite features can be viewed in private Buckhead residences.

Dave continued to expand his methods of artistic expression and began experimenting with glass and metals, creating delicate, table top sculptures inspired by his larger water features of earlier years. Although proving to be yet another rewarding learning experience, Dave had not yet found his niche, but a passion for the creation of sculpture with natural elements would lead to a phenomenal self discovery and new artistic skill.

With newfound enthusiasm Dave began his experimentation on discarded logs salvaged from their perilous date with the wood chipper. Using an array of hand tools, power tools, and sanders, he uncovered layer after layer of the wood’s history, discovering unique textures, patterns and natural coloration. He had connected at last. All of his sculptures are natural in color with no staining or color treatment and they have been created from reclaimed domestic and exotic woods, “I am giving renewed life to diseased, forgotten or doomed wood logs.” Dave may be seen rescuing a fallen tree from the side of the road or bargaining with commercial tree cutters to spare him a piece; and soon, will release the character and fluidity of a former inanimate object. His appreciation and instant understanding of wood and its abstract properties has led to a successful and brilliant representation of Dave’s creative vision, and a generous addition to the art community.
