After receiving a B.A. in Art at Virginia Tech, Mills studied at the Johnson Atelier in Princeton, New Jersey as an apprentice and intern, and headed the Resin Department for five years before opening his own mold making and casting studio.
Dividing his time between painting and operating Sculpture Cast from his studio in Roosevelt, New Jersey, Mills has been active in the art world for thirty years, exhibiting his paintings and sculpture while working with prominent artists and architects including Julian Schnabel, Georgia O’Keefe, Robert A. M. Stern, and George Segal. Early in his career, Mills worked on noted historical restoration projects including Carnegie Hall, Trinity Church, The Woolworth Building, and The Waldorf Hotel in New York, New York, The Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee, and The Pulaski Monument in Savannah, Georgia. Recent Sculpture Cast projects include casting life size sculptures for the new Yankee Stadium Sports Museum, the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Mills’ professional credits include monumental outdoor sculpture commissions and a New Jersey Arts Grant for sculpture. His paintings have earned juror awards and are in many private and public collections. Noting Rothko and Turner as influences and in the tradition of Van Gogh and O’Keefe flower paintings, Mills’ current series of single blooms against dark backgrounds are elegant depictions of movement and grace.
