MELANIE MAGEE

GALLERY
Born in North Alabama, Magee had a 'studio' (consisting of a picnic bench and a dangling lightbulb) set up in the spacious crawl space under her house. She copied paintings of Winslow Homer, Van Gogh and the Masters in order to learn. After graduating from Auburn with a BFA in Illustration, she moved to Boston and then Birmingham to work as an illustrator and graphic designer. She began pursuing fine art full time, working mostly in watercolor and oils, and found this to be her true vocation.

I am a believer and follower of Jesus Christ and my hope is that in everything I do, including my art, will honor the greatest Creator. My goal is to capture the transcendent beauty in nature and the mystery and mood that point toward eternity. In order to improve, I study and paint from life, mostly outside - small studies that may turn into large landscapes. Focusing on abstract shapes, value, and color temperature has helped simplify the process.  I have taken workshops from much better artists than I but I'm learning this quote is accurate: "You can get help from teachers, but you are going to have to learn a lot by yourself, sitting alone in a room (or outside).
