KAREN Z. HAYNES
I am interested in the magic of the image,
how the crosscurrents of light and shadow create shape and space. My work is a response to those elements in still life and landscape through an imagery that floats, reflects and explores contradictions.
Odd and seemingly inconsequential things attract me...the flicker of a shred of paper, stems and bricks, color moving up and down the ridges of a tin can.
I am always delighted by the traditional presentation of the unexpected. It is what gives me joy in the work, finding that tipping point that turns plain-vanilla into surprise. The paintings are oil on canvas or panel and the result of interacting with objects; revealing and obscuring, painting over and rubbing off, color and line moving through layer after layer of paint.
